Porangui

An artist with a unique upbringing in that Porangui has roots in Brazil, Mexico and the US, the one man outfit is used to making music spontaneously, never using a set list, and this live album illustrates his looping skills and world fusion ideas.

“Ganesha” gets off to a mesmerizing start with multiple voices chanting before loud percussion and spoken word enter, and each of the 6 additional tracks offers very different patches of Porangui’s vision. “Tonantzin” sounds like it could soundtrack a party around a fire in an exotic land, and “Oxum” is a playful, exquisitely layered world music stunner.

The 2nd half of the listen gets even more unclassifiable with the flute heavy, mysterious “Danza Del Viento”, the string acrobatics of “Canto De La Selva”, which then gets dreamy with some of the best singing on the recording. “Stardust” finishes out the journey with Porangui’s version of prog-rock that’s light and ethereal, yet also sonically engaging.

A very unique meshing of electronic manipulation, unorthodox age-old acoustic instruments and plenty of vocal techniques, Porangui’s solo orchestra approach is an enlightening and eye opening hour of very compelling music.
